SIMPLE WAYS TO SOLVE FLORIDA & MICHIGAN
30 May, 2008, Pirate Joe

Well, they’re about to do it. The Democrats could, (and probably will) make a big mess of this and thereby elect John McBushthirdterm. As I've stated before, in a business as serious as this, rules are necessary to, (among other things) show folks that everything is on the up-and-up. Accordingly, this is how I would approach the problem if I were Howard Dean. In order of preference:

1. Leave things as they are. None of these rules were surprises to anyone. Everybody knew beforehand. It was well-publicised. Those state election boards did it anyway.

2. Seat the delegates, but give them zero votes.

3.
Since there is no real way to tell what the vote would have been if it had been a fair contest, after the last primary, (just 4 days hence) tally the national percentage of pledged delegates each candidate has. Award the total Florida and Michigan pledged delegates according to that proportion.

4.
Again, since there is no real way to tell what the vote would have been if it had been a fair contest, seat the delegates and split them 50/50.
